Understanding Ayurveda

What is Ayurveda?

Ayurveda is an ancient system of natural wellness that originated in India over 5,000 years ago. It focuses on balance between body, mind, and spirit through diet, lifestyle, and natural remedies.

What does “dosha” mean in Ayurveda?

According to Ayurveda, each person has a unique balance of three energies, or doshas:

- Vata (air & space): Governs movement, creativity, and flexibility.
- Pitta (fire & water): Governs digestion, metabolism, and transformation.
- Kapha (earth & water): Governs strength, stability, and immunity.

These doshas influence everything from digestion and energy levels to mood and overall health. Food, like ghee, can help restore balance among the doshas.

Why is Ayurveda still relevant today?

Ayurveda’s principles are timeless. Its focus on natural foods, mindful living, and prevention aligns perfectly with modern wellness trends. By combining traditional wisdom with today’s quality standards, Shobhna’s Ayurveda makes it accessible for everyday life.

Ghee in Ayurveda

What is ghee?

Ghee is clarified butter — butter that has been gently simmered to remove milk solids and water, leaving behind pure, golden butterfat. In Ayurveda, it is regarded as one of the most nourishing foods.

Why is ghee considered special in Ayurveda?

Ghee is a sattvic food — pure, balancing, and life-enhancing. It supports digestion (agni), nourishes body tissues (dhatus), sharpens memory and intellect, and strengthens ojas — the vital energy linked to resilience and immunity.

Is ghee suitable for all doshas?

Yes — in moderation. Ghee balances Vata and Pitta very well due to its grounding and cooling qualities. For Kapha, it can be enjoyed sparingly, especially when paired with warming spices.

Why is ghee easier to digest than butter?

The slow cooking process removes most of the lactose and casein proteins, making ghee naturally lactose-free and easier to digest compared to butter.

How is ghee used traditionally in Ayurveda?

Ghee is used in multiple ways — in cooking, for herbal preparations, in cleansing rituals (panchakarma), and externally for skin and joint care.

Everyday Use

Can I cook with ghee at high heat?

Yes. Ghee has a high smoke point (around 250°C), making it excellent for frying, sautéing, and baking without breaking down into harmful compounds.

How can ghee be used outside of cooking?

In Ayurveda, ghee is also used for rituals, as a natural moisturiser for skin and lips, and in warm drinks or tonics as part of a daily wellness routine.

Everyday Wellness & Doshas

How can I use ghee and spices together for balance?

Ayurveda often combines ghee with herbs and spices to enhance both taste and wellness benefits. For example:

- Ghee with turmeric and black pepper in warm milk is soothing for Pitta and supports digestion.
- Ghee with cumin or ginger can help balance Vata.
- Light teas with warming spices such as cinnamon or clove pair well with Kapha types.

Can Ayurvedic teas help balance doshas too?

Yes. Herbal and spice-based teas are an easy way to support balance:

- Vata teas: warming, grounding herbs like ginger and cinnamon.
- Pitta teas: cooling ingredients like fennel, mint, or rose.
- Kapha teas: invigorating spices like black pepper, turmeric, or cardamom.

Health Benefits of Ghee

What are the main health benefits of ghee?

• Supports digestion by stimulating agni (digestive fire)
• Provides healthy fats that nourish the brain and nervous system
• Rich in fat-soluble vitamins A, D, E, and K for immunity, bone, and skin health
• Contains butyrate, which supports gut health and reduces inflammation
• Source of conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), linked with improved heart and metabolic health
• Strengthens ojas — vital energy, immunity, and resilience according to Ayurveda
• Promotes glowing skin and joint lubrication when consumed or applied externally
• High smoke point makes it safer for cooking than many oils
